Review

Situated on a pleasant side street off the Leidseplein, one of Amsterdam's main nightlife areas, The Akbar offers a wide range of popular Indian cuisine from their a la carte menu. They also have five reasonably priced fixed menus including one seafood, and one vegetarian. There's a proper tandoor oven on the premises so nan breads and tandoori dishes are authentically prepared. Suitable for both Muslims and Hindos, the meat is all from a halal source, and no pork is served. All vegetable side dishes are available as a main dish, basically a double portion with rice. The restaurant is comfortable and spacious so one should have no problem in finding a table. Particularly enjoyable were the Mint Tikka starter from the tandoor oven, and the main dish of Chicken Jahlfrezi.
