Opened in 1940, Café Eijlders became a hangout for artists and also members of the 2nd World War Dutch resistance movement. The decor has changed little over the years with the exception of a steadily increasing number of stained glass windows. The smoke from many thousands of cigarettes stains the walls creating the traditional "brown bar" effect. Nowadays, Café Eijlders is still frequented by local and visiting artists with a poetry evening on the third Sunday of every month. Café Eijlders provides a fine window into Amsterdam social culture.
