The Spoorweg Museum (Railway Museum), has been as such since 1954, and exists on the site of the old Maliebaan Station which closed in 1930 after the completion of what is today Utrecht Central Station. A very suitable spot for such a museum since Utrecht provides the central hub of the Nederlands railway system. As well as the fully and beautifully renovated original station complete with restaurant facilities, there is also a purpose built area housing the Spoorweg Museum's four railway worlds. The first transports the visitor back in time to the year 1800, the location being a damp English mine shaft where the first steam engines were put to work pumping out the water.
