Café De Vergulde Gaper, the name being taken from the "Guilded Gaping" Moorish head, traditionally the sign which adorned a pharmacy, is unsurprisingly housed in a building previously used as such. The head, and many of the old interior features of the pharmacy still remain. The Jordaan is undoubtably one of Amsterdam's most picturesque areas, and Café De Vergulde Gaper's canal side pavement terrace is an ideal place to sit back and watch it all go by. Throughout the day they serve a selection of snacks, sandwiches, and salads. The evening menu is reasonably priced and offers speciality dishes of the day as well as their regular courses. Very tasty pumpkin soup, and a nice tender steak. Daily menu details can be found on their website.
