From it's inception in 1881 Het Concertgebouw (The Concert Building), based on simplified designs submitted by architect Adolf Leonard (Dolf) van Gendt was constructed in the style of Viennese Classicism, and finished in 1888. Situated on a site chosen by the architect of the Rijksmuseum Pierre Cuypers, Het Concertgebouw occupied what was, in 1881, a field just outside the city boundary in Nieuwer Amstel. Described by Bernard Haitink as the best instrument in the orchestra it houses, Het Concertgebouw has the most wonderful acoustics, and is an ideal venue in which to enjoy any of the many and varied performances that take place there.
